Esperanza Hotel & Spa
Costa Rica
Esperanza means “hope” and this Spa & hotel project is an 18-acre bioreserve, integrating architecture within the natural landscape of the Costa Rican rainforest.
The building is designed to be porous, allowing daylight and local breezes to move through providing passive illumination and cooling.
A louvered façade and a green roof mitigate heat gain. Tidal pools ebb and flow beneath the building, which is raised on piles.
Wellness programs also drive the building design. The roof deck provides sunrise yoga and sunset massage treatments, incorporating local healing rituals with indigenous natural products.
Regional materials and craftspeople were engaged in the planning and ideation of the project with a conscious desire to foster “hope” to the community and environs.
