Amelia Island Plantation Spa
Fernandina Beach, FL
The site is located on a barrier reef island off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida. We took an eco-sensitive approach and preserved every tree by building a series of smaller pavilions that shifted around the trees and lagoon, harmonizing the constructed environment with nature.
A two-story atrium entry — which celebrates the massive strength, beauty, and warmth of local unfinished Douglas fir timbers — is bathed in natural clerestory light.
The spa’s exteriors are clad with residential-like gray clapboard.
Window-lined corridors with earth-colored tiles bring the outside natural palette within.
A zigzagged outdoor elevated walkway crosses the marsh and connects guests to Watsu Island, which hosts treatment rooms within an island pool house.
The site-sensitive design preserves the serenity of this inspired location and bird-habitat.
