Case Study: Summer House, Mill Basin, NY
At the summerhouse, natural light plays a dynamic role for its owners. The design focuses on the rear yard wellness-deck and pool bathed in southern light with a large 2nd story balcony with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels. A clerestory skylight floods the interior with light. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the home but blurs the separation between indoors and outdoors. This celebration of light and the outdoors contributes to a calming social atmosphere that promotes relaxation and well-being for the owners and guests alike.

Case Study: Mohonk Mountain House Spa – New Paltz, NY
Combine natural light with nature and you have a winning combination – nature nurtures!
This is the ethos behind the 155-year-old Mohonk resort located within 1,325 pristine acres within the Catskill mountains. Here we redesigned the existing Spa and created some light infused experiences. Guests come to Mohonk to hike the 85 miles of trails in pure nature, so we designed a rustic “summer cottage” where hikers can restore their weary muscles with a relaxing reflexology foot treatment and then receive the best massage of their life. We specifically designed an open-air pavilion for that purpose, nestled in the forest, and strategically sited it on a cliff that overlooks the lake below. Here, blissed-out guests take in the 360-degree views of the lake before and after their massage.
Another unique experience is our indoor pedicure located within the renovated Salon. We designed a raised “social banquette” where guests can take in a commanding view of the forest’s changing seasons. The interior lighting was designed to address a multitude of functions. The warm, subdued ambient lighting allows the outdoor tableau to become the prominent feature, while the use of spotlights highlight the pedicure work surface.
This thoughtful integration of light + nature provides a holistic approach to wellness, where the environment plays a crucial role in enhancing the therapeutic benefits of Mohonk’s sensory experience.
